Children are captivated by the Kelly Kirby approach as it takes them from something they know and understand (their family!) to something that is unknown to them (the keyboard and its sounds). The keys on the piano are taught as individual members of a ‘musical family’, each with its own sign (the note) and sound (the key that makes that sound).
The 4 books progressively introduce each family member, while incorporating foundational theory through proper musical vocabulary and an understanding of rhythm and how it fits into the creation of music.
The books are looseleaf style, with new lessons added each week, creating anticipation for what lies ahead. Children excitedly arrive at their lessons asking who they are going to learn about next in the family! The lessons are interactive, with children participating in the assembly of their books and thereby developing a sense of ownership.
When taught by a trained Kelly Kirby teacher, students can excel in RCM examinations or just play as strong recreational performers because that firm foundation that is required for further studies is at its core. Their joy and success is truly magical!
Although the Kelly Kirby program was initially designed for children ages 4-8, teachers have discovered over the years that age is simply a guideline. There are two factors that contribute to a child’s “readiness”: their maturity level and ability to focus; and the parent’s ability to organize and encourage a regular practice routine. Some teachers prefer to start teaching students as young as 3 years of age, while others prefer to wait until they are more independent and closer to beginning school.
It is up to the parents to assess whether their child is ready for piano lessons, however each individual teacher will provide their input to outline the best learning journey for your child.
When first inquiring about lessons, many parents express concerns about the fact that they themselves do not have a musical background. The Kelly Kirby approach is designed to not only ease these worries, but to provide a simplistic approach to learning piano that allows parents to feel comfortable helping their child. Through weekly guidance from your child’s teacher, you too will be able to assist your child with learning and developing their talents as aspiring pianists.
Here are ways that parents can be involved in the learning journey:
Provide a proper instrument for your child to learn on.
Although there may be reluctance or hesitance to invest in a piano, it is important to remember that practice is essential to the development of this skill. A free-standing electric keyboard is a suitable alternative in the short-term for learning at home, but an acoustic piano will better replicate the experience your child is having during weekly lessons and set them up for success.
Organize a consistent daily practice routine and stick to it.
In the beginning stages of the program, practice times can be shorter until your child is comfortable with the basics. Regular consistent practice throughout the week will help your child feel prepared and confident at their lesson. Think of piano practice like daily homework from school!
Connect with your child’s teacher for opportunities to showcase skills.
Support your teacher’s recommendations when they encourage your child to participate in studio recitals, festivals and other musical events. Children develop confidence when they are given the chance to share what they have learned with friends and family. Additionally, it helps them feel more comfortable in public and how to present themselves when giving oral presentations, participating in debates or other public-speaking opportunities.
Make music a way of life for your child!
One lesson a week is not enough to truly develop a child’s interest in music. Help them understand more about the world of piano by playing classical music in the car, taking them to children’s concerts hosted by symphony orchestras, reading books to them about the lives of famous composers. All of things build an appreciation for music and a desire to want to continue learning as they grow older.
